Steps to Success
Our Steps to Success training programme provides a range of modular training courses based around the key elements of Commerce & Industry and Horticulture. At the core of these courses will be Basic Literacy, Numeracy and IT, with additional elements such as CV writing and Interviewing Skills. Commerce and Industry modules include Warehousing, Reception Skills, Administration, Customer Care and Retail Selling Skills. These modules are delivered through our Materials Bank & Craft Centre in Fratton. Horticulture modules include Commercial Horticulture Growing Skills and Gardening Skills with other modules being developed to enhance the programme. These modules are delivered at our new horticultural unit at our Materials Bank location. The Main Objective of Steps to Success is to provide our Trainees (who are disabled, disadvantaged or have learning difficulties) with the skills and confidence that they require to progress into meaningful activities, part or full-time paid employment, self employment or, with others, to develop social enterprises (businesses of their own). All of our Trainees will be encouraged to gain a nationally recognised qualification from Entry Level to Level 3 leading to an Award, Certificate or Diploma through the National Open College Network. Completed Projects Alongside working towards Open College Network Units and work experience at the nursery the Trainees are encouraged to participate in local projects including “Fruit Salad” at Bishops Waltham and “Different World” at Sir Harold Hillier Gardens in Romsey. Fruit Salad - The Railway Roundabout at Bishops WalthamThis themed project was designed by the Trainees for “Bishops Waltham in Bloom” during 2006. In addition to choosing the theme and designing the five plant beds, the Trainees worked on growing the plants and preparing the ground on the roundabout. Different World Garden - At Sir Harold Hillier GardensA wonderful opportunity arose for the Trainees to restore a garden at Sir Harold Hillier Gardens in Romsey. The garden has lain dormant for over 10 years almost completely overgrown with brambles and undergrowth. Since June 2006 the Trainees had worked on clearing the garden rediscovering long lost pathways, walls and rockeries, which they have now successfully completed, by desigining the garden, planting all of the plants and implementing the overall design.
